Two LGBTQ + Films: ‘Cured’ & ‘Texas Strong’ Screen at Waquoit Congregational Church April 27, 4 – 6pm
Waquoit Congregational Church will host the screening and discussion of two LGBTQ+ documentaries on Sunday, April 27, 4 – 6pm. Curedtells the story of passionate activists, who, in 1973. persuaded the American Psychiatric Association to remove homosexuality from its list of medical illnesses. Texas Strong captures a conservative mother’s struggle to understand and support her seven year-old trans daughter, who has been banned from using the girl’s bathroom at school. The event is part of Movies That Matter, a screening and discussion series highlighting the role that faith and faith communities can play in responding to critical social concerns. Waquoit Congregational Church is located at 15 Parsons Lane, East Falmouth. The event is FREE and open to the public.
Nominated for an Emmy, Cured, by Patrick Sammon and Bennett Singer, is based on recently discovered archival footage of APA proceedings and interviews with gay rights activists, closeted psychiatrists and survivors of electroshock conversion therapy. Emmy Award winner Texas Strong,by Daresha Kyi, is a powerful portrait of Kimberly Shapply, an evangelical Christian mom, who, at first, rejects her daughter Kai’s insistence that she is a girl trapped in a boy’s body, but goes on to advocate for her trans child in their church community and at her school. At this challenging time for members of the LGBTQ+ community, these two films provide valuable lessons for those who want to understand and resist renewed attacks on the right to dignity and freedom of sexual identity, gender identity and expression for all.
Discussion after the films will be led by Joe Lima, president of PFLAG Cape Cod, along with several colleagues. PFLAG provides support, education and advocacy for LGBTQ+ people, families, friends and allies.
According to Waquoit Congregational Church’s pastor, Reverend Nell Fields, the Movies That Matter series builds on the church’s long standing social justice mission activities. “Waquoit Congregational Church is an open and affirming member of the United Church of Christ. The films we’ve selected are beautifully crafted. They raise important and challenging issues facing our community and country. By coming together to learn and to discuss these issues in a safe and respectful space, we live our values.”
Additional films in the Movies That Matter series include Join or Die, May 18, 4 – 6pm, How to Sue the Klan and Stranger At The Gate, June 25, 7-9pm.
These events are FREE and open to the public. Popcorn and cold drinks provided.
