Talk on Cape Verde Set for Sunday, March 9

Dr. Dana Mohler-Faria, former president of Bridgewater State University, will share his insights on the Republic of Cabo Verde history and culture in a free public talk on Sunday, March 9 at the Waquoit Congregational Church. The presentation starts at 2 pm and will be followed by a sampling of Cape Verde cuisine at 3 pm.

As president of BSU, Mohler-Faria led the University’s first delegation and study tour to Cabo Verde. His efforts to strengthen and deepened ties to Cabo Verde led to the creation of the Pedro Pires Institute for Cape Verdean Studies at Bridgewater. Moreover, Cabo Verde recognized Mohler-Faria with the nation’s highest honor, the First Medal of Merit, from President Jorge Carlos Fonseca.

“As a result of its history, Cape Verde has a very unique culture,” said Mohler-Faria, who was the first Cape Verdean the US to be elected president of a four-year college or university. “For example, before its independence in 1975, Cape Verdean immigrants to the United States were registered as Portuguese immigrants. That’s not that way anymore.”

Following Mohler-Faria’s presentation, there will be a sampling of Cape Verdean food.

The presentation is free and opened to the public. Reservations are required, though. RSVP to 508-548-5269.

The Waquoit Congregational Church is located at 15 Parsons Lane and Route 28 in E. Falmouth.
