Waquoit Congregational Church Hosts Screening and Discussion of “Youth Vs. Gov” on Sunday, Sept. 15, from 2 to 4 PM.
The documentary follows the story of 21 youthful plaintiffs who file a ground-breaking lawsuit against the US that eventually reaches the Supreme Court. The event is part of “Movies That Matter,” a new documentary screening and discussion series that aims to shine a spotlight on the role that faith and faith communities can play in exploring and responding to critical and often controversial concerns.
A discussion period will follow the screening.
The Juliana plaintiffs portrayed in “Youth Vs. Gov” are drawn from diverse American communities impacted by the climate crisis. They assert that the government has willfully acted over six decades to create the climate crisis, thus endangering their constitutional rights to life, liberty and property. Filmed over a five-year period by documentary director Christi Cooper, the film is at times triumphant and heartbreaking. But as these youths wait for their case to be decided, they pioneer a promising new strategy—using the courts to hold governments and corporations responsible for their role in the climate crisis.
According to Waquoit Congregational Church’s pastor, the Reverend Nell Fields, the series builds on the church’s long-standing social justice mission activities.
“The films we’ve selected are beautifully crafted. They raise important and challenging issues facing our country and community. In these post-COVID-19 times, people are hungry to come together to learn and to discuss these controversial issues in a safe and respectful space.”
Additional films in the series include “A Tree of Life: The Pittsburgh Synagogue Shooting,” on October 20 and “What Do You Believe Now?” on November 17.
The Waquoit Congregational Church is located at 15 Parsons Lane in East Falmouth. The event is free and open to the public. Popcorn and cold drinks will be provided.
