Interfaith Service of Remembrance Sept. 11

Church news archive · Published September 3, 2016

This Sept. 11 will be 15 years since the events we’ve come to know as 9/11 occurred. Much has changed since then, but the need to remember and honor the fallen and first responders has not.

To observe this day, the Waquoit Congregational Church will hold an Interfaith Service of Remembrance and Peace on Sunday, Sept. 11 at 8:30 a.m.  The half-hour service will include prayers of peace, tolling of the bell at 8:46 a.m. (when the first place hit the World Trade Center) and songs of hope. Piper Roger Gamache will play the processional and recessional. Mashpee Boy Scouts will serve as usher and will conduct a flag ceremony.

“The events that happened on 9/11 impacted our country as well as people in our own community. It’s important that we take time to remember the victims, the first responders and all who witnessed the events,” said The Rev. Nell Fields, minister at Waquoit Congregational Church. “I believe the best way to honor the victims of 9/11 is to renew our pledge for peace and to continue to live our lives as people of hope.  One of the ways we find and strengthen hope is to gather together as a community.”

The service is opened to the public, regardless of faith tradition. It will be held outside in front of the flag pole. Waquoit Church is located at 15 Parsons Ln. and Rt. 28 in E. Falmouth.

In 2009, Congress declared 9/11 a National Day of Service and Remembrance.  Thus, later in the day, from 4 – 6 p.m., the Waquoit Church, in conjunction with the Falmouth Jewish Congregation, holds a benefit concert for Louisiana flood relief.  All proceeds from donations and food sales will benefit flood victims.

Anyone who wants to help with the 9/11 interfaith service or the concert to benefit the Louisiana flood relief may contact the Waquoit Church at 508-548-5269.
