For anyone who has lost a loved one, the holidays – especially Christmas – can be difficult. Our culture tells us to be happy and joyful. We hear holiday sounds: bells and songs. There are even the smells: pine and cider and snicker doodle cookies. We see lights everywhere…in windows, on trees.
People of Christian faith know what these symbols stand for: hope, joy, peace, love. Yet, for those living with grief, these symbols can also bring back feelings of loss. Christmas, the “happiest time of the year,” can also be the saddest.
One way to cope with feeling is to attend a “Blue Christmas” service, an ecumenical worship where feelings of loss and grief can be acknowledged openly. While it is a subdued and quiet service, it also has a message of hope. It includes candle lighting, communion, prayers and singing.
An ecumenical Blue Christmas Service will be held Tuesday, Dec. 20 at 7 pm at Waquoit Congregational Church in E. Falmouth. Other communities participating include Church of the Messiah, Christ Lutheran Church, First Congregational Church Falmouth, Mashpee Congregational Church, North Falmouth Congregational Church and the Upper Cape Chaplaincy.
Everyone is welcomed to attend. For more information about the service, contact Rev. Nell Fields at (508) 548-5269.
