Bethlehem Peace Light – Dec. 9, 5-7 p.m.

Church news archive · Published December 5, 2016

The Bethlehem Peace Light, a flame from the perpetual fire housed in the grotto at the Church of the Nativity in Bethlehem, will be on display at the Waquoit Congregational Church on Friday, Dec. 9, from 5-7 p.m.  The light, brought to Waquoit from Bethlehem through scouting organizations, is under the care of Mashpee Boy Scout Troop 36, Falmouth Brownie troops 62008 and 62754, and Cape Cod Venturing Crew 37.

Since 1986, the Peace Light has been transported from Bethlehem to Austria where is distributed to delegations who take it back, with a message of peace, to their own counties for use at ecumenical services. The peace light first came to New York in 2001 by Canadian Scouts who brought it to Ground Zero.  This is the second year Waquoit Congregational Church has housed the flame.

“This is a great opportunity for the community to get involved in something with such global significance. I’m glad to be able to participate,” said Elias Higgins Life Scout from Troop 36.  “I’m really excited that we have other scout troops involved as well.”

The four scout troops involved in the Dec. 9 event will sponsor a station in the church dedicated to peace. Visitors may stop at each display. In addition, visitors are invited to bring an oil lamp or enclosed candle, or other device to hold the flame so it may be trasnported back to homes or other houses of worship. The event is free and opened to the public.

In addition, the Bethlehem Peace Light will be featured every Sunday during worship at the Waquoit Church during the Advent and Christmas seasons.
